Hi there
I have Adobe Premier 5.1 and I think it is a fantastic peice of software. What an incredible program. Im constantly suprised at what you can do with it, you truly are limited only by your imagination.
But it does require a fair whack of computer experience to make the most of. Id also recommend a very fast computer (but this is video editing, you need that anyway.)
It isnt totally bug free, but I can live with this, since it does far more than I ever imagined I would need. And the adobe website is full of tips.
I dont consider my set up to be remotely proffessional: the final picture quality is crap - but thats more to do with my computer and my capture card, than Premier.
However since Premier is a PC or MAC based tool, I think it will always suffer from this. Hence why I dont consider it a professional package. In my mind Professional is a Steenbeck or an AVID but thats my opinion. For the record I dont consider 3D studio MAX to be 'professional' either, although you can get excellent results from it - try using SOFTIMAGE, or a UNIX/Indigo based graphics package and you will see what I mean. - but lets not rant on about Professional...
One thing - these video tools should be used with caution I think. Adding fancy transitions and special effects may be fun to do, but dont nessescarilly make your film any better.

Hi,
Lots of people seem to be very excited about an editing programme called,
FAST PURPLE, I know that people in education in the UK,
who actually teach video editing are big
believers in this package.

One word...
Vegas.
Get Vegas, it's loads better than
Premier, or anything else out there
if your working on a budget.
It's easy to learn and it's fast.
As for 3dsMAX not being professional,
that's complete tosh.
It might not have the "Look at me I work
in a SOHO posthouse" look, but if your
skilled enough and have learnt all it's
functions then it's as formidible as SoftXSi
or any other highend package.
It has it's foibles, but its so flexible
that they outweigh the niggles in the
long run. All I can say is that you've
probably seen more MAX stuff in Film and
TV than you might like to think.
It's down to the skill of the operator
at the end of the day.
For Vegas

yes, vegas is excellent IMHO, esp. if you have a library of directx plugins
HOWEVER
i have a tonne of premiere plugins that Vegas does not support, so i generally edit in premiere cos I'm used to the interface, then post-sound on Vegas
it seems that Sonic Foundry know what you want in software -- something functional!
I think the best move they could make to gain market share is release (recompile?!) Vegas for Linux ...
Anyone done anything with Broadcast2000 on Linux? Any good? Worth updating my kernel for ? ...
